Knowledge to Help Afford College

With so many high schools seniors sending in their college applications this time of year, many families are searching for advice on how they're going to pay for their child's education once the acceptance letters arrive.

On Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., I will be hosting a Tele-Town Hall with expert speakers from the California Student Opportunity & Access Program (Cal-SOAP). Join us to get answers from the experts to help you and your incoming college student make a game plan to take advantage of all of the various financial resources available. We will delve into grant opportunities, scholarships, the FAFSA application, how to cost-compare different college options, and more.

Do you have questions about aging and how to plan for the future? Are you in the process of looking for the right senior living situation for yourself or a loved one? Are you unsure of where to start?

On Thursday, September 30, from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., I will be hosting a Tele-Town Hall discussion on aging and how to plan for it with Carlsbad-based nonprofit Senior Life Source. We will delve into some of the major areas of concern, from finding the right in-home care providers or senior living communities, to financial planning and estate management. A panel of experts in aging and senior care will guide us through common questions many folks have when it comes to preparing for this stage of life.

Do you have questions about what actually means to be vaccinated? Looking for advice on how to stay safe once you have the vaccine? Have you heard something that sounded off and you want to know what a doctor has to say about it? 

On Tuesday, May 4th from 4-5pm, I will be hosting another Tele-Town Hall with local public health experts and medical professionals to guide us through some of the main questions you may have about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Small Business Resource Webinar with SBDC

On Tuesday, March 9th, from 4:00pm-5:00pm, my office will be partnering with the San Diego & Imperial Small Business Development Center to offer small businesses a comprehensive review of all the services and resources available to them at this time. Attendees can expect to hear about specialty services for minority-owned businesses, ongoing federal assistance, and may also get some insight into what to expect with the rollout for newly announced state relief funding.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to email questions in advance of the event so that they can be included in the program. Senior Scam Stopper Seminar

Senior citizens are unfortunately some of the most common victims of scams and fraud schemes. In fact, 1 in 18 seniors has been the victim of a scam or financial fraud. With so many new types of fraud becoming prevalent these days, it's important to stay informed about what to watch out for.

On Tuesday, February 9th from 10am-12pm, my office will be presenting our second annual Senior Scam Stopper Seminar in partnership with the Contractors State License Board, this time via Zoom! This forum is designed to help you or a loved one protect yourself from various types of fraud, from identity theft and telephone scams to financial, insurance, and mail fraud. Seniors, their families, and caregivers are welcome to virtually attend this seminar.

COVID-19 Tele-Town Hall: Applying to College & How to Pay For It

On Thursday, December 3rd from 4-5pm, I will be hosting another Tele-Town Hall discussion, this time on applying for college and how to pay for higher education. I will be joined by professionals in admissions and financial aid who will provide parents and guardians with some tips for what to look out for as their high schooler is going through the process, and some advice to students as they navigate different application requirements. We will also discuss financial aid and explore scholarship opportunities available to students from a variety of backgrounds.

Veteran & Military Service Awards - Virtual Ceremony

On November 17th from 10-11am, I will be hosting a virtual awards ceremony for the recipients of the 2020 Veteran & Military Service Awards and their families. In the month of October, the North County community responded to the call for nominations with a diverse array of nominees. These nominees were chosen because of their outstanding service to the people of Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, and Camp Pendleton. 

The recipients by category are as follows:

Child Online Safety Webinar - Human Trafficking & Online Predators

Sex trafficking is the largest underground economy in San Diego after drug trafficking, and social media is often a preferred method for targeting the most vulnerable. With kids online more than ever these days, they are at greater risk of becoming vulnerable to traffickers.
 
On Thursday, November 12th, from 4 – 5pm, I will be hosting a virtual webinar with District Attorney Summer Stephan and Community Partnership Prosecutor Cheryl Sueing-Jones to talk to you about how to protect your children from becoming victims of human trafficking and other forms of online sexual exploitation.
 
District Attorney Stephan has devoted her life to protecting children and giving a voice for justice to the voiceless and most vulnerable. She is a national leader in the fight against sexual exploitation and human trafficking.
