Assemblymember Boerner Responds to Project Vela with Density Bonus Bill

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, CA. — Today, Assembly Bill (AB) 87 by Assemblymember Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) with 54-0 votes on the Assembly Floor and is headed to the Governor’s desk. AB 87 would ensure that Density Bonus Law is used primarily on building residential units instead of high-rise hotels.

This is in response to Project Vela in Pacific Beach, a 238-foot tower development that exceeded the San Diego’s height limit. The project would add 139 hotel rooms and only 10 affordable units.

“California is not in a hotel crisis; we are in a housing crisis,” stated Assemblymember Tasha Boerner. “Developers are exploiting a loophole in the Density Bonus Law to profit from projects that were meant to assist families struggling with housing. I am proud to take a stand against these misguided developments and protect hardworking families in our state.”
