SAN DIEGO, CA. — Today, Assemblymember Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas), the Padres Foundation, the San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Youth Services, and Cox Communications joined together for a Backpack and School Supplies Giveaway at Dewey Elementary School to make sure students are ready for the 2025-2026 school year. Students received free backpacks, essential school supplies, local and state resources for an academically successful academic year, and received well-wishes from the Padres’ Swingin’ Friar & Pad Squad.
“Getting your kids ready for the school year can get very expensive, and I am so happy to be partnering with incredible organizations in San Diego to make sure our families don’t bear the brunt of the costs to take their kids to school. We want to make sure each student feels supported and knows that we want them to succeed,” said Assemblymember Tasha Boerner. “Thank you so much to the Padres Foundation, the San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Youth Services, and Cox Communications – this event could not be possible without you.”
“The Padres Foundation is proud to support Assemblymember Tasha Boerner’s efforts, and above all, the students who are benefiting from the Backpack and School Supplies Giveaway,” said Padres Foundation President Tom Seidler. “It is equally as meaningful to us to be able to make a positive impact on many deserving families by equipping their children with the essentials they need for a strong and successful start to the school year.”
“The first day of school, no matter the grade level, is always filled with plenty of excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead,” said Cody Petterson, President, Board of Education for San Diego Unified School District. “We are so thankful that Assemblymember Boerner is contributing to the big day for Dewey Elementary and the rest of the communities she represents with the generous donation of backpacks and school supplies.”
“At San Diego Youth Services, we strive to provide a comprehensive service approach to helping vulnerable youth, creating a world where all youth have opportunities to achieve their goals to make their dreams a reality,” states CEO Jonathan Castillo. SDYS provides a broad continuum of services to help youth overcome challenges that put them at risk, including housing, shelter, case management, counseling, mental health services and educational support.
"Cox Communications is proud to partner with Assemblymember Boerner's office on this annual backpack giveaway. Education has always been a cornerstone for our company, and we understand that when students have the tools they need to succeed, entire communities thrive. We're honored for the opportunity to partner with Assemblymember Boerner to make a meaningful difference in students' lives and support our community," stated Cassandra Weinlein, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs, West Region, Cox Communications.
