WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2025 — With the federal Affordable Connectivity Program winding down, states are exploring new approaches to maintain broadband affordability for low-income households, according to panelists at a Broadband Breakfast Live Online event Wednesday.
With New York’s Affordable Broadband Act (ABA) now in effect, lawmakers in other states are filing similar legislation that requires large Internet Service Providers to offer low-cost plans for financially-strapped households in their respective states.
Assembly member Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) introduced a bill that would mandate internet service providers to make affordable plans available to California residents.
The bill, AB 353, is meant to aid the nearly 3 million California households that lost federal support through the Affordable Connectivity Program when the benefit ended last year.
A newly-approved bill signed in late September by Gov. Gavin Newsom allows cities within San Diego County, or the county itself, to ban electric bicycles for riders who are younger than 12 years old.

California has saved millions of children from losing health insurance now that legislation is in effect to protect those under five on the state's Medicaid program.

Hundreds Take Climate Action in San Diego County
Millions of California residents are at risk of losing health care due to simple paperwork errors, but a new bill aimed at safeguarding provision was put on hold by an Assembly Appropriations committee this week.
Assembly member Tasha Boerner (D-Encinitas) introduced the Protecting Medi-Cal Coverage for Californians Act (AB 2956) to protect adults enrolled in Medicaid, and vowed to keep fighting for it.
NOT IN MY HOUSE: Californians are mad as hell about their utility bills, and lawmakers know it.
But their efforts to micromanage state agencies’ handling of water and electricity rates are falling flat.
When the heat hits in California, public swimming pools become vital refuges for tens of thousands of families, many of modest means. But because of bureaucratic red tape and the aftermath of pandemic shutdowns, many pools statewide are confronting a labor pool problem — not enough lifeguards.
