Recycling in Canada
This past week, I was in Canada with the California Foundation on the Environment and the Economy (CFEE) learning about best practices in recycling! We started in Vancouver, B.C. where we saw some innovative operations at a variety of facilities that handled everything from standard residential waste, cans and bottles, drywall, and construction debris recycling, as well as the world's leading carbon removal facility that is literally taking yesterday's CO2 out of the air to reduce GHGs.
Calgary was a great experience! We learned about their plastic, can, and bottle recycling logistics, as well as chemical plastic recycling to increase the amount of recycled plastic in packaging, composting, and recycling asphalt.
Banff was the final stop in our recycling education tour. We met the awesome 36 year old Mayor and staff who shared with us how they will achieve their waste diversion target of 70% by 2028, moving them closer to zero waste. Their Library of Things was a fantastic example on how to reduce hard to recycle items, as was their pallet-to-biomass heating system. So much to learn from a stunning small town!
Thank you, Canada, for sharing your innovation and inspiring us to do more in California!

Metropolitan Transit System
#TeamTasha joined other legislative staff members for a workshop and tour with the Metropolitan Transit System! Unlike most other counties, San Diego County is only serviced by two public transit agencies, MTS and NCTD.
Keeping San Diego County connected is not an easy task, and it is made possible, in part, by trained dispatchers in these impressive control rooms helping buses and trollies navigate their routes safely and efficiently.

Everytable La Jolla
#TeamTasha paid a visit to Everytable La Jolla to celebrate their grand opening of their fifth location! Their goal is to bring healthy, nutritious, and affordable food to every community they serve. To keep their prices affordable, they are based on the median income of the five communities they have stores in: Chula Vista, Vista, College Area, La Jolla, and Miramar. They also have partnerships with local nonprofits such as the Regional Task Force on Homelessness, the County of San Diego, People Assisting the Homeless, and more!
