This May, on #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, I want to share a reminder to check in on your mental health.

In California, we’ve ensured people get the support they need. All it takes is dialing the emergency hotline, 988, when in a mental health crisis.

Calling 988 could result in stabilization services and long-term care for mental health needs.

There are resources available to assist Californians needing help. If you or a loved one are facing these concerns, you are not alone.

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Day 2023

It was great meeting with constituents that volunteer with Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest! We discussed my AB 1481, which seeks to ensure essential Medi-Cal coverage for pregnant women even while waiting for official enrollment in the program, and my support for more protections for providers and training for out-of-state physicians.

This is critical following the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe V. Wade. It's so exciting to see younger generations taking action and standing up for reproductive freedom. #CALeg

Recognizing Tardive Dyskinesia Week

It was an honor to present HR 19 on the Assembly Floor. This resolution recognizes last week as Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) Awareness Week and aims to shed light on TD, an involuntary movement disorder associated with prolonged use of certain mental health medicines used to treat certain mental health conditions.

It was a pleasure meeting with members of the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council to talk about how we can continue to advance good paying jobs and worker protections throughout California. #CALeg

UC Advocacy Day

This week, I met with UC San Diego on UC Advocacy Day to discuss my support for providing more housing for low-income students and how we can ensure the main focus for our students is their education. #CALeg

AAPI Heritage Month

This week, I want to share Russell Low’s story, a physician with a passion for discovery and storytelling. His discoveries in the medical field have changed the way that his colleagues all over the world practice medicine and image disease.

Discovery of his own roots began 30 years ago through the stories of his parents and their siblings. Growing up in Central California, more American than Chinese, he felt his connection to Chinese culture and history was limited and incomplete.

Russell lectures on Chinese-American history, and his family’s story has been featured on the History Channel, National Public Radio, Public Radio International, the Voice of America, the California State Railroad Museum, and the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Russell lives with his wife Carolyn Hesse-Low in La Jolla, California where they raised their two sons Ryan and Robert. We are so grateful for his contributions to #AD77!

2023 Minerva Scholarship

Looking for help with college? The Women in CA Leadership Foundation’s Minerva Scholarship program begins accepting applications from eligible students on April 15, 2023! The deadline for applications is May 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm!

The Minerva Scholarship program was established to assist deserving students by offering financial assistance to meet educational expenses. Encinitas Firefighters Pancake Breakfast

It was such a pleasure to join the Pancake Breakfast at Paul Ecke Central Elementary School this weekend.

We flipped about 500 pancakes with Encinitas Firefighters! I love seeing our community come together to support our school and students. Special thanks to PTA President Becky Putnam for all of her work! #AD77

Little Italy Walking Tour

It was great to join New City America for a walking tour of Little Italy! It’s one of the most popular and recognizable destinations in San Diego for residents and tourists alike. I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to spend time in this historic community. #AD77

Taste of Cardiff

Taste of Cardiff was a huge success! Thank you Cardiff 101 Main Street for bringing us together, where we enjoyed amazing local treats! We appreciate all the volunteers and businesses that make this possible.

Assembly District 77: Internship Program

My office is now accepting applications for our Internship Program, located at my District Office in Carlsbad. The internship is open to all individuals with an interest in learning more about state government and public service while building professional skills.

Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience working with state agencies, interacting with the public in an official setting, attending outside meetings and events alongside staff, networking with community leaders, and more. Those with strong interpersonal skills and some background in communications and social media outreach are encouraged to apply.

Interns will work as unpaid volunteers with flexible part-time hours. This role requires a three-month commitment, with flexible part-time hours and flexible start/end dates.

If interested, please submit a cover letter and resume to Field Representative Suleyma Balderas at suleyma.balderas@asm.ca.gov with the subject line "AD77 Internship Application: [Last Name]."

Young Women's Empowerment Network

My office is accepting applications for the Young Women’s Empowerment Network! This is a professional development community for our emerging women leaders to learn, grow, seek out opportunities, and improve their leadership skills together.

The network will also help these young women expand their knowledge of state and local government and offer volunteer internships and training workshops for those who are interested in gaining skills in public and community service.

All applicants must be 18-25 years old, identify as female and live in the 77th Assembly District: Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and the coastal communities of La Jolla south to Coronado. Applicants need to fill out a form and give a brief one-page personal statement. If you know of a young female leader, we would welcome your nomination!

Nominations are accepted on an ongoing basis. However, the deadline to submit to participate in the 6 sessions of free monthly trainings is April 30, 2023 by 11:59 pm. Please email your completed application and personal statement to: Mariah.Kallhoff@asm.ca.gov.

California Youth Jobs Corps

The California Youth Jobs Corps is a program to bring together youth across the state to help address urgent challenges in California's communities. This new initiative is a partnership between the state, cities, and counties around California to help young people get hired for meaningful and purposeful jobs in their community.

Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program

Need help on your water bills? The San Diego County Water Authority is partnering with the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee of San Diego County and Campesinos Unidos, Inc. to help spread awareness of the federal Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program!

The program will pay up to $2,000 in water or wastewater bills for qualified, low-income households, including renters.

The California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) helps families get more money back on their tax return and has boosted the incomes of hundreds of thousands of families since it began.
