__SALUTATION__

Assemblymember Tasha BoernerFor many Californians facing food insecurity, it can be stressful trying to put food on the table during the holidays. The California Department of Social Services has a variety of CalFresh food assistance programs and resources for eligible Californians to help alleviate food insecurity.

Earlier this week, I stopped by Solana Beach City Hall to donate peanut butter to the North County Food Bank's "Scare Away Hunger" Peanut Butter Drive for families in need. 1 in 4 children in San Diego County faces food insecurity, so over the next months I encourage you to explore your options to help combat food insecurity.

Cheers,

DISTRICT HIGHLIGHTS

"Scare Away Hunger" Peanut Butter Drive

Scare Away Hunger Peanut Butter Drive

Earlier this week, I stopped by Solana Beach City Hall to donate peanut butter to the North County Food Bank's "Scare Away Hunger" Peanut Butter Drive. This drive, which took place during the month of October, provides families in need with protein-dense, shelf-stable peanut butter to help combat food insecurity.

This drive may be over now, but that doesn't mean you can't help out in other ways! The North County Food Bank and the San Diego Food Bank are in need of donations, and run various donation drives throughout the year.

Community Climate Action Day at Liberty Station

Community Climate Action Day at Liberty Station

We had a great turnout for the Community Climate Action Day project in Point Loma this past weekend! Point Loma residents, led by the Point Loma Association's Mean Green Team, turned out in full force to help plant native bottlebrush trees at the 52 Boats Memorial in NTC Park.

The 52 Boats Memorial honors American submariners lost during WWII, and the stone monuments recently received a facelift as several of them were in need of repairs or replacement. #TeamTasha spent the morning making sure the memorial looks its best, just in time for Veterans Day!

Encinitas Día de los Muertos Celebration

Encinitas Día de los Muertos Celebration

Día de los Muertos originated in Mexico centuries ago, and it is celebrated on November 1. Every year, I celebrate Día de los Muertos in Encinitas with Encinitas Friends of the Arts, and this year was their tenth anniversary!

Encinitas Friends of the Arts brings together community members for a day full of traditional Mexican ballet folklórico, mariachi music, and delicious foods like pan de muerto, a sweet bread often placed on ofrendas. I have attended this event since I was a City Councilmember in 2016, and I look forward to it every year!

Barona Education Grant Check Presentation to Dewey Elementary School

Barona Education Grant Check Presentation to Dewey Elementary School

On Monday, I joined Chairman Raymond Welch of the Barona Band of Mission Indians in presenting Dewey Elementary School's Principal Tanya McMillin with the Barona Education Grant of $5,000. The Barona Band of Mission Indians believes that a good education is the key to future success, and I want to thank them for the donation, and all that they do to support education and opportunity in California.

I also want to commend the students, teachers, and staff at Dewey Elementary School for their high academic achievement and test scores, which are above the statewide average!

Encinitas Chamber of Commerce "Meet Your Elected Officials" Event

Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Meet Your Elected Officials Event

Earlier this week I participated in the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce's "Meet your Elected Officials" event with Chamber and community members. This event was a great chance to talk with the residents of #AD77 about my legislative agenda and get to know their priorities.

In addition to myself, we were joined by Congressman Mike Levin, State Senator Catherine Blakespear, County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer, Encinitas Mayor Tony Kranz, Encinitas City Councilmembers, and other local community leaders. Thank you to the Chamber for inviting me!

#USvsHATE National Poetry Contest Winner

#USvsHATE National Poetry Contest Winner

On Monday, I visited Earl Warren Middle School to congratulate Maddie Boles, an 8th grader at Earl Warren, and her teacher Jenny Oehler on Maddie's poem being selected as a winner of the national #USvsHATE contest.

#USvsHATE encourages students to share their ideas for public, anti-hate messages for schools and society. The winning projects "counter bigotry in schools, create welcoming classrooms, and embrace inclusion and justice for all." I was moved by Maddie's poem, "WALLS" and am inspired that the students of #AD77 are using their talents to spread inclusivity and fight hate.

California WIC Association Meeting

California WIC Association Meeting

Today I met with members of the California WIC Association to discuss their priorities for federal funding to continue providing the fruit and veggie allotment for Women, Infants, and Children without creating a waitlist. The current federal funding levels for fruits and veggies under the WIC program are insufficient for all participants, and I look forward to supporting our state in ensuring that all Californians are fed and healthy.
