Assemblymember Tasha BoernerOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the strength of the people fighting this disease and increase awareness in our community.

Breast cancer is the second-most common cancer among women in the United States, so be sure to get routine checkups. Early detection and prevention can be the key to catching the disease in its early stages.

To all the people battling breast cancer and your families, I wish you strength and a speedy recovery.

California Biotechnology Foundation Tour

The life science industry in California is the largest life science industry in the world, leading the way with research and new developments in the field of biotechnology. Massachusetts is another hub for the biotechnology industry in the United States.

This week, I took a trip to Boston with the California Biotechnology Foundation to visit some of Boston's finest life science industries and learn how we can encourage innovative health policies and support biotechnology growth in our own state.

Dr. Olga Vasquez (she/her)

U.S. Army Recruiting Week in San Diego

Dr. Olga Vasquez is a professor emerita at UCSD and the Director of La Clase Magica (LCM) - a collaborative, multi-generational, after-school learning, wellness and family strengthening program at Earl Warren Middle School. Dr. Vasquez founded La Clase Magica over 30 years ago and today is part of the prestigious UC Links network administered by the Graduate School of Education at UC Berkeley. Dr. Vasquez's leadership has helped to expand LCM and built partnerships with San Dieguito Union High School District, Solana Beach Library, and the Friends of the Solana Beach Library. New programming engages families and promotes the library as a safe space to acquire information, borrow materials and participate in activities. Dr. Vasquez received her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1989.

I had a great time last Thursday joining the Downtown San Diego Partnership at their annual Rediscover Downtown event to celebrate the installation of their new Board of Directors. The Downtown Partnership plays such a huge role in making Downtown what it is today, from activating local spaces to keeping our streets clean and safe. Congratulations to all the new board members!

The Days for Girls Club at Coronado High School is a chapter of the larger Days for Girls International organization, which strives to achieve menstrual equity across the globe, and to provide education and menstrual health products to women in need.

#TeamTasha provided certificates of recognition to the club's senior members and spoke with them about the importance of being involved in your community and the impacts of their work. Thank you for all that you do!

My office is now accepting applications for our Internship Program, located at my District Office in Carlsbad. The internship is open to all individuals with an interest in learning more about state government and public service while building professional skills.

Interns will work as unpaid volunteers with flexible part-time hours. This role requires a three-month commitment, with flexible part-time hours and flexible start/end dates.
