As we celebrate the Fourth of July weekend here in beautiful San Diego - with fireworks, family barbecues, and beach days - it's also a moment to reflect on the values that shape our democracy.
I know that for many, it's hard to feel optimistic about our current circumstances, but I believe that hope and change start with staying engaged.
This Independence Day, let's celebrate not just our freedoms, but also our responsibility to continue striving for a better future!
Cheers,

The Public Official Employment Transparency Act

Transparency matters. That's why I'm proud to share that AB 1286— The Public Official Employment Transparency Act— just passed the Senate Elections Committee!
This bill requires elected or appointed officials to disclose any job offers or employment negotiations on their Form 700, so the public knows when officials are planning their next move, while still making decisions that impact Californians.
Legislation to Ban Plastic Microbeads Passes Senate Environmental Quality

AB 823 to ban toxic plastic microbeads PASSED the Senate Environmental Quality Committee!
Plastic pollution is a public health emergency. These tiny toxins end up in our oceans, our food, and even our bodies. With AB 823, we're taking a bold step to protect Californians, our communities, and the environment we love.
AB 823 would ban the sale of non-rinse-off personal care products and cleaning products containing plastic microbeads used as an abrasive to clean, exfoliate, or polish by January 1, 2029. This bill would also ban the sale of personal care products containing plastic glitter by January 1, 2030.
Huge thanks to our fierce allies 5 Gyres, Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Californians Against Waste, and Clean Water Action California for championing this fight.
Standing Up for Our Immigrant Community

All races and backgrounds must speak up and denounce the current administration's attacks on our immigrant community. Parents are afraid to go to work, and children are terrified to go to school.
As we gear up to celebrate the 4th of July, it is essential to remember what makes our nation great, our diversity. We are a country of immigrants.
I am proud to stand with my colleagues in sending a message to the federal government that California sees what is happening, and we will not stand by and let it continue.
Habitat for Humanity

Homeownership is the foundation for stability and opportunity, and thanks to San Diego Habitat for Humanity, 14 more families are on their way to achieving that dream.
I was honored to speak at this year's Taste of Home event, celebrating the incredible work Habitat does to build stronger, more resilient communities. Thank you to CEO and President Kwofi Reed for the warm introduction and your continued leadership.
Congratulations to the 14 new families who will soon call their Habitat houses home in 2025!
100th Anniversary of Belmont Park

This July 4th, we celebrate a true San Diego treasure — the 100th anniversary of Belmont Park!
Since opening its doors in 1925 as the Mission Beach Amusement Center, Belmont Park has been a cornerstone of our coastal community — from the iconic Giant Dipper roller coaster to The Plunge swimming pool, it has brought joy to generations of San Diegans.
Thanks to the vision of John D. Spreckels and the dedication of community advocates who saved the coaster from demolition, Belmont Park continues to thrive as a symbol of our region's resilience and spirit.
I'm proud to recognize Belmont Park for 100 years of enriching San Diego's cultural and recreational landscape. Here's to preserving our history while looking forward to the next century of memories.

I understand that many of us are feeling angry in the face of what is happening in our local communities and across the country. Individuals are being taken from the streets without due process, and people are living in fear every day. In these moments, it is essential to know your rights. The California Immigrant Guide offers various resources in multiple languages to assist you or those you know. I know these are unprecedented times, and we will get through this.
