Can you believe we're already a few days into 2025? I hope it's off to a fantastic start!
This week, my colleagues and I headed back to Sacramento to kick off the first year of the two-year legislative session. We will introduce bills in the coming months, and I look forward to sharing the work my team and I are doing at the Capitol.

City of Encinitas Swearing In
Congratulations to the newly elected council of the City of Encinitas, and a heartfelt thank you to our outgoing councilmembers! We appreciate the hard work and dedication of Mayor Tony Kranz, Deputy Mayor Allison Blackwell, and Councilmember Kellie Hinze over the past few years. I look forward to collaborating with incoming Mayor Bruce Ehlers, Councilmember Luke Shaffer, and Councilmember Jim O'Hara.

San Diego Food Bank
The San Diego Food Bank supports over 400,000 people a month.
Since 2006, The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program has provided weekend food packages to chronically hungry elementary school students. The organization also offers a senior food program, a federal program that gives monthly supplemental food packages to income-eligible senior citizens aged 60 and over.

The Coronado Public Library Has Expanded
The City of Coronado recently expanded its public library! In 2023, I obtained $150,000 from the state budget to add study rooms and refurbish the library's historic reading room for veterans, students, families, and children to enjoy!
The Coronado Public Library is one of the busiest, offering over 700 programs for the public to enjoy!
Congratulations on the library's additions - community members will love them!
Ocean Beach Community Foundation Drive
Every year, the Ocean Beach Community Foundation (OBCF) donates food and toys to families in San Diego. Recently, we donated food and toys to 100 families and 70 seniors for the holiday season. Thank you to OBCF President Shelly Parks for organizing this annual event.
Encina Wastewater Authority Retirement
Congratulations to Encina Wastewater Authority Chair Jim Hernandez for his years of service! Since being appointed in 2013 and elected Chair in 2024, Jim has made a significant impact by adopting the 2024-2025 operating and capital budget, leading an energy resiliency assessment, and shaping a visionary five-year strategic plan. Your hard work and dedication over the past decade truly shine, Jim! Thank you for all you do!

2025 Women of Impact Nominations
In honor of Women's History Month, I need your help to spotlight the efforts of extraordinary women in the 77th Assembly District. The 2025 theme is "Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations." All people who identify as women of all ages who live, work, attend school, or volunteer in the 77th Assembly District are eligible. Assembly District 77: Spring Internship Program
My office is accepting applications for our Spring Internship Program, located at my District Office in Solana Beach. The internship is open to all individuals with an interest in learning more about state government and public service while building professional skills.
Interns will work as unpaid volunteers with flexible part-time hours. This role requires a three-month commitment, with flexible part-time hours and flexible start/end dates.

San Diego Festival for Science & Engineering
The 17th annual San Diego Festival for Science & Engineering is back at Petco Park for children interested in exploring the subject. This event will take place on Saturday, March 1, 2025, with over 130 local businesses, corporations, and community organizations. Children will experience interactive and hands-on exhibits and activities.
Claim your Payment from California's Gas Settlement
If you purchased gas in Southern California between February 20, 2015, and November 10, 2015, you can submit a claim to get your money back. This comes after California reached a $50 million settlement with gas companies in July. You can submit a claim by visiting www.calgaslitigation.com.

The countdown to tax season has officially started! Remember to start gathering your documents and see if you qualify for tax credit programs like the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) or Young Child Tax Credit.
Cash for College
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are now open for the 2025-2026 Academic Year. If you or someone you know needs help completing these applications, there are several webinars available to assist you through this process. Remember to complete your applications by March 3rd.
Assistance with 2024-2025 Property Taxes
Need assistance with your residential property taxes? The State Controllers' Office's (SCO) Property Tax Postponement (PTP) Program allows homeowners who are seniors and disabled to apply for a deferred payment of property taxes on their principal residence. CalKids - Children's College Savings Program
It is back-to-school season, and it is important to think about how you are saving for your child's future! CalKIDS was created to provide Californian children greater access to higher education institutions. Newborns and eligible low-income public school students may receive up to $1,500 in a CalKIDS account. This can help jumpstart your child's savings for college and career training!
REAL ID Deadline: May 7, 2025
By May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID to board domestic flights and access federal facilities. To apply, gather one proof of identity and two proofs of California Residency, complete the application at California Department of Motor Vehicles, and visit a DMV office. Be REAL ID ready!

There are two free mental health apps available to all children, youth, young adults, and families in California. BrightLife Kids and Soluna are two free apps to help families raise happy, healthy young minds. BrightLife Kids is for families whose children are 0-12 years old, and Soluna is for teens and young adults between ages 13-25.
