__SALUTATION__

Part of the role of the Legislature is to provide oversight over public agencies. One way we do this is through authorizing our State Auditor to evaluate issues and report back to the Legislature. I am honored to be a member of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, the bipartisan, bicameral body entrusted with this important work.

We have excellent public higher education institutions here in California, and it is essential that they be fair, open, and affordable. That's why I requested two audits, one of the University of California admissions process in light of the recent scandals and one of the Cal State University fees that at some CSUs are nearly equal to that of tuition. Both audits were approved on an impressive bipartisan vote on Wednesday!

We will continue to demand the highest level of transparency and accountability from our public agencies. My colleagues and I look forward to the reports and the possible policy fixes that will make our institutions even more effective for all Californians.

• Joined Assemblymember Jim Frazier and Assemblymember Shirley Weber at the Select Committee on Intellectual and Developmental Diseases hearing in San Diego to hear personal stories from families and health care providers on how the state can better support and improve services for those with disabilities.
  
  
  
  
• Field representative Fernando Hernandez attended the Green Oceanside Kitchen grand opening on Saturday. The Green Oceanside Kitchen is a partnership through the City of Oceanside and O’side Kitchen Collaborative to use surplus food from local farms to provide sustainable meals to the community while educating residents on how to be better environmental stewards.
  

• Field representative Carol Waldman attended a ribbon cutting ceremony at Dr. Kim Bell, Physical Therapy, in Encinitas to celebrate the opening of the new office which specializes in treating vertigo and dizziness in patients of all ages.
  
  

• AB 467,  Sports Prize Equity “Equal Pay for Equal Play”  that requires all athletic competitions held on state lands to offer equal prize compensation regardless of gender, passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday!
  

• Two state audit requests I authored, one to review the University of California admissions process and the other to seek answers to the sometimes exorbitant student fees at California State University campuses, received bi-partisan support from the Joint Legislative Audit Committee on Wednesday.
