This past weekend we celebrated Mother's Day to recognize the hard work of all the mothers, grandmothers, angel mothers and aunties in our lives. Thank you!

Much of my journey into the political space has to do with being a mom. As you probably know, I got my start in public service trying to get a stop sign near my kids' school -- something folks had been trying to do for over 20 years. Our team got it approved in just six months! That is the power of women -- and specifically mothers -- leading and fighting for our communities.

Every day, I am working hard in Sacramento so that our kids have a future to look forward to with the educational opportunities they deserve, the jobs they need to put food on the table and a roof over their heads, and policies that help leave our world a little better than we found it.

So, thank you to all the different kinds of moms out there and all you do to make our lives a little better!

• Attended the Vista Chamber of Commerce Rising Star Celebration and spoke in celebration of the nine exceptional high school seniors from Vista who were awarded scholarships for their academic excellence.
  
  
  
  
• Field Representative Cori Schumacher attended the Casita Center for Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Technology's 5th-grade exhibition on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each student spent 8 weeks researching an issue related to environmental sustainability, poverty, social issues, and economic development which then culminated in an inspirational school-wide exhibition.
  
  
• In honor of National Small Business Week, field representative Alex Kiwan attended the annual Small Business Association Awards hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration in San Diego to recognize 15 distinguished small businesses that create jobs and grow our region's economy.
  
  
• Hosted my first Community Gatherings in Encinitas and Carlsbad on Saturday to talk with the community about state legislation and the local issues impacting our quality of life. These gatherings help guide my work and decisions in Sacramento. I am hosting two more Community Gatherings in May please see below for more details.

• AB 1731, my bill to appropriately regulate how long short-term vacation rental platforms may rent a unit where the primary resident is not on site in San Diego County's coastal zone, passed out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Thursday and heads to the Assembly floor for a vote as early as next week.
  
  
• AB 931, my bill to increase women's representation on local boards and commissions, also passed out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee on Thursday and heads to the Assembly floor for a vote as early as next week.
  
  
• AB 1426, my bill to codify the "Save Trestles" decision to protect San Onofre State Beach, will be made a "two-year bill" to allow more time for planned amendments.

Last week, I stood in support with Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, along with my colleagues from the Senate and Assembly, at a press conference to announce a host of proposed budget initiatives to expand paid family leave and eliminate taxes on California families.
